The Race

In 1968, nine men set off on a race to become the first person to sail alone nonstop around the world. Only one finished. Robin Knox-Johnstone was that man.

Like the original 1968 Sunday Times event the 2026 Golden Globe Race is very simple:

Depart from Les Sables-d’Olonne, France on September 6th, 2026,

sail solo, non-stop around the world via the three Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d’Olonne.

In celebration of that historical race entrants are limited to sailing similar yachts and equipment to what was available to Sir Robin in the first race in 1968.

Competitors must

  • Sail in production boats between 32ft and 36ft overall (9.75-10.97m)
  • Designed prior to 1988
  • No satellite navigation (GPS) allowed. Navigation will be by sextant and the stars.
  • No water-makers, competitors will catch rainwater.
  • No computers, auto-helm, or shore-based weather routing advice.

One sailor, one boat, facing the great oceans of the world.
